"Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them."
William Shakespeare, Twelfth Night. Act II Scene V.
BE NOT AFRAID OF GREATNESS
Be Not Afraid of Greatness is a collection of short films, all directed by first time female directors, that take inspiration from the stories of William Shakespeare (Macbeth, Othello, Sonnet 73 and The Taming of the Shrew) but each with their own unique twist.
The stories of William Shakespeare are some of the most enduring, exciting and unforgettable ever written. Throughout his plays he showed us what it was like to be human and gave credence to emotions that so many of us have felt. Emotions such as heartbreak or love sickness like the star crossed lovers Romeo & Juliet, a burn for ambition like the tortured Macbeth, and that soul destroying jealousy like the trusting Othello.
Shakespeare wrote 37 plays separated into 3 categories; comedies, histories and tragedies. Each with their own intricate plots and cast of characters. The task for this project was to choose one of his plays or sonnets, take inspiration from its themes, plots and emotions, and write and produce a short film based upon his work.
Our students in their 3rd year were the directors of the films and held auditions to find their cast and their crew. Every single member of our company was involved both as a performer and as part of the production crew, giving them all a hands on insight into work in the film industry.
The entire project was completed within 6 weeks. 2 weeks for preproduction to plan, 2 weeks for production to shoot and then 2 weeks for post-production to edit. The films were premiered to 2 sold out screenings at the VUE cinema in Stroud on February 8th 2017 and then released on YouTube 2 days later.
